Mexico city, August 1st, 2022 - Four months into their partnership, the rapid grocery delivery service JOKR and local sharing app OLIO, announce that 25,000 meals have been prevented from going to waste in Mexico.
The first-of-its-kind partnership, which officially launched in March this year following a successful pilot, sees OLIO’s network of trained “Food Waste Hero” volunteers in Mexico collect surplus food that has not been sold, but is still fit for consumption, from JOKR hubs.
In order to ensure all the extra food is used, rather than thrown away, the Food Waste Heroes upload it to the OLIO app so that local people in the area can arrange to collect and enjoy it for free.

Since launching, over 4,000 families have received free food via the partnership, which is the equivalent to 45,000kg of CO2 emissions avoided and a staggering 8 million liters of water saved. As a result, the partnership not only greatly contributes to food security in local neighborhoods, but also has a significant environmental impact. It is estimated that 20 million tonnes of food is wasted in Mexico each year, with Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey contributing the most to this total. JOKR currently has 27 hubs across these three locations - all of which work with OLIO to save and redistribute surplus food.
German Peralta, Co-Founder and CEO of JOKR North Latam commented “We are very pleased with the development of our partnership with OLIO and are already seeing great impact in our local communities. Being able to positively contribute to the environment while also helping fight food waste, has been a rewarding experience thus far and we look forward to further creating a positive impact to the communities we serve.”
OLIO co-founder and CEO, Tessa Clarke said: “It is fantastic to see that in just four months, our partnership with JOKR has already made a real, tangible difference to both the environment and local communities across Mexico. Food waste is one of the single biggest crises modern society faces and it is imperative that individuals and corporate organizations come together to help tackle it. We are so grateful to JOKR for entering this partnership with such passion and commitment - long may it continue.”
“I really like collecting food and bringing meaning to the word 'hero,’ because this is not just about donating. OLIO and JOKR are allowing families to enjoy meals at home. This is the labor of real human beings.” Marilin Acosta, OLIO Food Waste Volunteer in Mexico City. “This is generating a real positive impact. Thanks to OLIO and JOKR I’ve been able to help people to enjoy a proper meal.” Luis Pilotzi, OLIO Food Waste Volunteer in Mexico City.

OLIO also has a network of volunteers (“Food Waste Heroes”) who are trained members of the community. These volunteers collect unsold food from local supermarkets, canteens, quick service restaurants and more, and redistribute it to the local community via the OLIO app, thereby enabling those businesses to achieve zero food waste locations. JOKR is the first business in Mexico that OLIO has partnered with to provide this service.
Over 6 million people have joined OLIO so far, with half being outside of theUK. The largest international markets are Singapore and Latin America.
