The innovative instant grocery delivery company fights food waste by providing surplus foods from their hubs at a significant discount
Mexico City, August 31, 2022 - As another step in permanently reducing food waste, JOKR has launched its very own “Treasure Bag '' to let customers buy surplus food at a reduced price, thereby stopping it from going to waste. The Treasure Bag is individually packed with a variety of products that are two to about five days of expiration, but still of impeccable quality and safe to enjoy. Each bag has a market value of $200 MXN, which equates to approximately $10 USD and is sold at $59 MXN, approximately $2,95 USD.
The products featured in the bag are a mixture of JOKR’s regular categories, i.e. bakery, dairy, snacks, drinks as well as packaged foods and will vary from day to day. The products, which are sold at roughly 70% discount cannot be seen before and hence, are a surprise to the customer.
“I’m thrilled to be launching Treasure Bags across our markets. We’ve already seen a large interest in fighting food waste since we initiated our sustainability efforts and I’m excited to see how much of an impact we can have in the coming months and years. By doing something as simple as purchasing a Treasure Bag we’re all doing our part in tackling climate change while getting some delicious food at a great price", says Co-Founder of JOKR, German Peralta.
The sales of the Treasure Bag allow for approximately 2.5kg of CO2 emissions being saved, which becomes substantial considering that since launch, more than 23,000 products, i.e. around 8,730 bags were sold, i.e. nearly 22 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions saved, which is the equivalent to one thousand trees.
“Globally, one third of all food supplies are wasted every year, which is why we want to use our platform to implement initiatives to combat waste and do good for our planet. We promote a culture of zero waste in all of our operations, with food being a top priority. In addition to planning demand and replenishment, we look for other innovative alternatives that help reduce food waste from different fronts, such as our Treasure Bags”, explains German Peralta.
The Treasure Bags see some great popularity amongst JOKR customers, with a 71% growth in orders since the project was launched in the spring. So far, it is available in Mexico, Chile, and Peru, with further rollout planned over the next few months.
